Jerzy Nowosielski died on February 21, 2011 at the age of 88. He was a well-known Polish painter, illustrator and designer, philosopher and theologian of the Orthodox Church. Nowosielski was regarded as one of the greatest contemporary icons writers.
Jerzy Nowosielski was born on January 7, 1923 in Cracow.
He was well-known for his religious compositions (wall paintings, iconostases, polychromes) in the Orthodox Churches in Cracow, Bialystok and Jelenia Gora, the Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Cross in Wesola, the Franciscan Church in the Azory district of Cracow, and the Greek Catholic Church in Lourdes, France.
He also painted portraits, landscapes, still lifes, nudes and abstract pictures. His works are found in Polish museums and also in private collections in Canada, the USA, and Germany. In 1993 he was awarded a prize by the Polish cultural foundation Wielka Fundacja Kultury (the Great Culture Foundation) and received an honorary doctorate from the Jagiellonian University in 2000.
