JERUSALEM 18 Jan 2012 Thousands celebrate Armenian Christmas
10/1/2012
Christmas comes but thrice a year in the Middle East, so the Armenian Orthodox festival offers one final opportunity to celebrate the occasion, following the Roman Catholic and Protestant Christmas of Dec 25 and the Greek/Syrian/Russian Orthodox services of Jan 6.
Armenians have lived in Jerusalem for over for two millennia, with around 5000 remaining to this day. Holding Israeli or Jordanian citizenship, many still flock to celebrate Christ’s birth and Epiphany at Qasr al-Yahud on Jan 18.
Led by Torkom Manoogian, Patriarch of Jerusalem, it is an odd fact that Armenian Orthodox in Jerusalem celebrate Christmas on a different day from their brethren in the Republic of Armenia, who hold their festivities 12 days earlier. That’s because the Patriarchate of Jerusalem still abides by the ancient Julian calendar, while everyone else is on the Georgian.
Ironically, the situation is further complicated by the fact that there are also Armenian-speaking Jews in Israel who, for bureaucratic reasons, are not included in official statistics. For this reason, no one really knows how many Armenians live in the region.
