IRSS survey: Mugur Isarescu and Patriarch Daniel top Romanians’ trust

Governor of the National Bank of Romania Mugur Isarescu is the politician trusted by most Romanian people, according to a survey conducted by the Romanian Institute of Social Studies (IRSS) and sent to Agerpres on Tuesday.

According to the survey, Mugur Isarescu enjoys the trust of 41 percent of Romanian people, followed by Patriarch Daniel, leader of the Romanian Orthodox Church with 40 percent and Bucharest general mayor Sorin Oprescu with 37 percent. The next positions in point of trust are held by chairman of the opposition National Liberal Party Crin Antonescu with 32 percent, chairman of the opposition Social Democratic Party Victor Ponta with 25 percent, director of the Romanian Intelligence Service George Maior with 22 percent whereas Prime Minister Emil Boc, Defence Minister Gabriel Oprea, Tourism Ministry Elena Udrea and honorary chairman of the ruling coalition member National Union for the Progress of Romania Cristian Diaconescu each got 17 percent of the respondents’ trust. On the other side of the coin there are chairman of the New Generation Party George Becali with 8 percent of the total votes and chairman of the Greater Romania Party Corneliu Vadim Tudor who received 7 percent.

Almost 70 percent of the respondents believe Romania is on a wrong track, 9 percent believe the things are alright and 20 percent believe the evolution to be ‘neither good nor bad.’ Two percent of those interviewed have failed to answer or said they did not know.

20 percent of the respondents believe the Parliament can solve the issues Romania is facing at the moment. In the same time, 17 percent of the polled believe Romania’s issues can be solved by the European Union and also 17 percent believe they can be solved by trade unions.

According to the survey, 12 percent believe the presidency can solve Romania’s problems, 9 percent voted for the army and 5 percent for the foreign investors with the same figure voting for the Government. 3 percent of the polled have failed to vote or said they did not know, 2 percent voted for intellectuals and the same for the Church while the political class received one percentage point of the votes.

The survey was conducted between June 27 and July 7, 2011 on a sample of 890 interviews from individuals of the adult population in Romania, and has a standard statistical error margin of 2.57 percent for a 95 percent trust level.
USL topping Romanians’ vote intentions, followed by PDL, UNPR and UDMR
The opposition Social Liberal Union (USL) of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Conservative Party (PC) is topping the vote intentions of Romanians. Next come the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL), major at rule, the Union for Romania’s Progress (UNPR), minor at rule, and the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR), minor at rule, according to the findings of a recent national poll conducted by the Romanian Institute for Social Studies (IRSS) released on Tuesday.

If a general election were held on Sunday, 49,50 percent of respondents would vote USL, 22.5 percent PDL, 7.8 percent UNPR and 5.7 percent UDMR.

According to the same findings, 5.2 percent of the respondents would vote extra-parliamentary People’s Party; 4.60 percent extra-parliamentary Greater Romania Party (PRM) and 1.70 percent extra-parliamentary New Generation Party (PNG). As many as 3 percent would vote other parties, 21 percent would not vote and 10.1 percent would be undecided, while 1.5 percent of the respondents did not answer.

As far as the presidential option is concerned, if a presidential election were held on Sunday, PNL Chairman Crin Antonescu would garner 32 percent of the vote; incumbent President Traian Basescu 22 percent; PSD Chairman Victor Ponta 17 percent; UNPR Honorary Chairman Cristian Diaconescu 7 percent; media owner Dan Diaconescu 6 percent and UDMR Chairman Kelemen Hunor 5 percent. PRM Chairman Corneliu Vadim-Tudor would win 4 percent, and PNG Chairman Gigi Becali 3 percent. As many as 4 percent would vote for other candidate, 2.3 percent of whom mentioned Bucharest General Mayor Sorin Oprescu, while 11.3 percent would not vote, 10.2 percent would be undecided and 2 percent did not answer.

The poll was conducted June 27 – July 7 on a sample of 890 interviews with Romanian adults. It carries an error margin of 2.57 percent for an accuracy rate of 95 percent.
