His Holiness Patriarch Kirill Consecrated Holy Transfiguration Cathedral of Donetsk
Already in the midday the people started gathering at the Cathedral of Transfiguration of Our Savior. Even occasional passers-by understood – the people who gathered at the Cathedral were in festive mood. They came with the balloons, flowers, posters: “Kirill is our Patriarch!”, “Welcome to Donbass, Your Holiness!” Among them there were many visitors not only from Donetsk region, but from all over Ukraine.
At the Cathedral the First Hierarch was met by the clergymen of the Diocese of Donetsk, dressed in red paschal vestments. Nearby stood the cadets of Donetsk Military Lyceum dressed in the white parade uniform. When his Holiness the Patriarch approached the Cathedral, thousands of faithful let fly in the sky the balloons with the Patriarch’s symbolic.
Having blessed the believers who gathered there, the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church conducted the rite of consecration of the Cathedral of the Holy Transfiguration of Our Savior. Concelebrating with him were Metropolitan Vladimir of Kyiv and All Ukraine, Metropolitan Agathangel of Odessa and Izmail, Metropolitan Hilarion of Donetsk and Mariupol, Archbishop Varsonofy of Saransk and Mordova, Archbishop Metrophanes of Bila Tserkva and Bohuslav, Bishop Aleksey of Belgorod-Dnestrovsky, Bishop Metrophanes of Horlivka and Slovyansk, Bishop Sergy of Solnechnogorsk, Bishop Varnava of Makeevka, Bishop Alexander of Pereyaslav-Khmelnytskyi.
The first hierarch read the prayer, sprinkled the altar and walls of the Cathedral with Holy water and put the holy antimension on the altar.
After the service the Patriarch visited the lower church dedicated to the venerable Sergius of Radonezh, where he was offered some presents: the Icon of the Mother of God “Novodvorskaya”, painted in XIX century, exclusive pen Tibaldiс with the image of the Holy Hierarch Nicholas, and a mini-belltower with bells molded at the Metallurgical Plant of Donetsk.
His Holiness the Patriarch left, and the people remained for a long time, sharing impressions of what they had seen and of the Patriarch’s words.
