On 14 March 2011, the Metropolitan Synod of the Metropolitan See of Cluj, Crişana and Maramureş met in a special session, at the Metropolitan Residence of Cluj-Napoca, under the chairmanship of His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church and Metropolitan Locum Tenens of Cluj, to assign the candidates to the vacant dignity of Metropolitan of Cluj, Alba, Crişana and Maramureş and Archbishop of Vad, Feleac and Cluj.
According to the stipulations of the Statutes for the Organisation and Functioning of the Romanian Orthodox Church concerning the election of a metropolitan, the members of the Metropolitan Synod assigned:
– His Eminence Archbishop Andrei of Alba Iulia and
– His Grace Assistant Bishop Irineu Bistriţeanul,
by ballot, as candidates to the vacant dignity of Archbishop and Metropolitan of Cluj.
The names of the two hierarchs the Metropolitan Synod assigned will be presented to the members of the Eparchial Assembly of the Archdiocese of Vad, Feleac and Cluj, which will meet in a consulting session with the members of the Metropolitan Synod at the Metropolitan Residence, Tuesday, 15 March 2011.
In case of need, the Eparchial Assembly and the lawful members can ask to complete the list of the candidates with one more hierarch, selected from the list of the eligible candidates drafted by the Holy Synod Office.
The final list of the candidates will be submitted to the Holy Synod, which will meet in a working session Friday, 18 March 2011, at the Patriarchal Residence, to elect the future Metropolitan of Cluj.
