His All-Holiness receives Hungarian President János Áder at the Phanar

On Saturday, March 15, 2015, His All-Holiness received President János Áder of Hungary at the Phanar. The presidential delegation included Hungarian Ambassador to Turkey Gábor Kiss and Consul General to Istanbul Balázs Hendrich, as well as Dr. Mr. László Szőke, Ms. Anita Altorjai, Brigadier General Mr. László Szegő and Mr. Ferenc Kékesi.

One year ago, an agreement was signed in the Nandorfehervari Hall of the Hungarian Parliament between the Hungarian government and the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Discussions at the Phanar focused on the Orthodox Christian communities of Hungary and environmental issues. At the conclusion of the visit, His All-Holiness presented President Áder with a hand-painted icon of the Byzantine empress Irene, a replica of her depiction in Haghia Sophia and one of the earliest depictions of a Hungarian woman.
