Hindus urge newly elected Patriarch of Serbian Orthodox Church to promote interfaith Dialogue

Congratulating His Holiness Patriarch Irinej Gavrilovic, 80, on his election as the 45th Patriarch of influential Serbian Orthodox Church, Hindus hope that he would promote interfaith dialogue in the world.

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, pointed out: “Religion is a complex component of human life. Dialogue helps us to see interconnections and interdependencies between religions and even similarities in doctrines”.

Rajan Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, further said: “Religions should at least work together on common religious concerns like peace-making and peace-keeping, social and economic development, freedom and human rights.”

Besides Serbia and surrounding countries, there are now Serbian Orthodox communities worldwide. Headquartered in Belgrade, Serbian Orthodox Church reportedly has 7-11 million adherents.

Hinduism, oldest and third largest religion of the world, has about one billion followers and moksha (liberation) is its ultimate goal.
