Head of Greek Orthodox Church in Mid-East next Week
21/1/2011
The head of the Greek Orthodox Church will begin a week-long visit to Syria and Lebanon Monday to discuss the rights of Christians in the Middle East, his spokesman Haris Konidaris said Friday.
This official visit by Archbishop Leronimos will be an opportunity to discuss relations between branches of the Eastern Orthodox Church, Konidaris said.
“It is logical that the primary question of religious liberty will be discussed,” said his spokesman .
There have been repeated Western calls for the protection of the Arab world’s Christian communities after two deadly attacks on churches in Egypt and Iraq.
Leronimos will meet Syrian President Nashar al-Assad and the country’s Muslim leadership Wednesday in Damascus. He then travels Friday to Beirut to meet Lebanese President Michel Sleiman and the heads of the Maronite and Armenian churches, according to his programme.
The Greek spiritual leader’s visit to Syria and Lebanon will end on January 30.
