BEIRUT: Judicial sources said Thursday that clues from Wednesday’s attack on the Greek Orthodox archdiocese in Beirut indicate that the perpetrators had extensive knowledge of the building and its operations.
“What happened to the archdiocese cannot be the work of a gang of thieves alone,” a judicial source said. “The thieves knew how to enter secret places, which are probably only known to those who are familiar with the ins and outs of the archdiocese, and this detail could be very helpful in the investigation.”
Thieves broke into the archdiocese in Ashrafieh Tuesday overnight, stealing money from a safe and vandalizing a number of its offices.
The source said the judicial police were still investigating the attack under the supervision of Magistrate George Karam, and the police were waiting for the results of fingerprint analysis of evidence they collected from areas in the building that had been looted and vandalized.
The attack drew wide condemnation from the country’s political and religious leaders including former Prime Minister Saad Hariri and Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea who called Greek Orthodox Archbishop Elias Audi Thursday to express their solidarity.
