Greece’s pledge to hire one public- sector employee for every five that depart applies to the Greek Orthodox Church as well as government departments, Kathimerini reported, citing unidentified interior ministry officials.

The issue will be discussed by Hieronymos, Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, and the twelve member Synod today, following meetings with the interior ministry yesterday, the newspaper reported.

In Greece, 10,811 churchmen, including priests, were classified as permanent state employees, according to preliminary government data through June 2010.
