“More than Fifteen hundred visas were granted and hundreds of people have already arrived” in France, the ministry said. A ceremony to welcome the Christians from Iraq and Syria took place on Saturday in the presence of President Francois Hollande.
“I want to salute your full integration (…) you can bring your talent, your culture and your willingness to be helpful to France…,” the president said.
About 200 people who came from Iraq or Syria were invited to the ceremony in the gardens of the interior ministry.
“You are all welcome here”, for his part, said the interior minister, Bernard Cazeneuve, stressing that “Christians are among the first victims of the Islamic state’s (ISIS) religious cleansing.”
“No one can remain indifferent to the plight of Christians in the East, and France less than anyone else,” he added, noting that 90% of Christians had left Iraq between 2003 and 2014, and more 300,000 had fled Syria from 2011 to 2014.
