Turkey is implementing reconstruction works in the historic Armenian city of Ani. ICOMOS Armenia company has tried to use the international levers to have Armenian specialists engaged in the process, its chairman Gagik Gyurjyan told reporters today.
A resolution on involvement of an international expert group in the reconstruction of Ani’s main temple and St. Savior Church was submitted at the 17th General Assembly of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in November 2011. The group should comprise Armenian specialists, as well.
According to Gagik Gyurjyan, despite some resistance, the Turkish side finally accepted the decision under general pressure. The international expert group is currently being formed.
Gagik Gyurjyan informed that four churches are currently being reconstructed in Ani. The restoration works are funded by World Monuments Fund , Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and the UN Ambassadors Fund.
Chairman of ICOMOS Armenia sees political pretexts under the recent interest of the Turkish authorities towards Armenian monuments. “If Turkey wants to restore Armenian monuments and preserve the Armenian cultural legacy to achieve political goals, we must make use of this opportunity,” Gagik Gyurjyan said.
