Former Georgian president’s jailed son visited by Church Primate

Tbilisi, June 1, Interfax – The head of the Georgian Orthodox Church, Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II, has visited Tsotne Gamsakhurdia, the incarcerated son of first post-Soviet Georgian President Zviad Gamsakhurdia, a lawyer said.

Ilia II most likely asked Tsotne Gamsakhurdia to stop the hunger strike that the convict began this month in protest against prison inmates being allegedly tortured and beaten up, Keti Bekauri, a lawyer for the former president’s son, told reporters.

Bekauri said, however, that Gamsakhurdia was continuing his hunger strike and that he was also demanding setting up a council to monitor the treatment of prison inmates.
