For Sarah’s Happier Childhood
Church of Serbia – 8/2/21
Sarah’s operation at the Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston requires 244,311 US dollars. We invite all people who are able with their payment to help raise the necessary amount of money as soon as possible.
Sara’s father Danilo Nikolic is a doctor and a graduated theologian. He is a man who has helped many in life, and now it is our turn to help him in great trouble. Sara was born as a healthy child after a properly maintained first pregnancy. When she was three months old, he had her first epileptic seizure and after a detailed examination, doctors diagnosed her with “Tuberous Sclerosis” (TSC), which was molecular genetic analysis of Sara’s blood sample and definitely confirmed in a laboratory in Spain.
Tuberous sclerosis is a multisystem disease caused by a gene mutation, which originated in Sarah. It is a rare disease, incurable and extremely unpredictable, because each individual is affected by the disease – ranging from almost unchanged state, to complete dysfunction and severe mental retardation, which can often be accompanied by benign and malignant tumours (cancer) on all organs. Epileptic seizures damage the brain and other organs, and adversely affect the child’s psychological development.
Sara’s case, unfortunately, is of a more severe form. The findings of her head magnetic resonance imaging have so far described over 17 tumour changes, changes in the fundus of the right eye and multiple changes in the skin of the trunk, face and head. Sara has frequent check-ups by neurologists, cardiologists, nephrologists, ophthalmologists, physiatrists and paediatricians.
Every day she needs various types of stimulation and therapy that could help her, therapy with speech therapists takes place three times a week, with occasional evaluation by psychologists, child psychiatrist and the work of a special educator. Sara is “breaking through” the previous drug therapy.
Due to the complete uncertainty of the further course of the disease, her family was forced to try treatment abroad. Brain tumor surgery is the only solution for her. It is essential for Sara to be examined at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston for additional sophisticated diagnostic examinations that will determine which surgery would be best for Sarah, and surgery itself. In Serbia, this type of diagnosis and treatment is not provided to patients with TSC. In America, it is a standard procedure, and the operation itself can significantly affect the further development of the child and the quality of life. Sara is a cheerful and loving child. Help us do everything possible to give Sara a chance for a happier childhood and a better quality of life. Our little means everything to Sara! Let’s be humane! Let’s help Sarah!
