Global: The Primate’s See of the Finnish Orthodox Church (Ecumenical Patriarchate) will be moved from Kuopio to the Capital City of Helsinki. The decision was taken by the local council of the Finnish Orthodox Church. The change will be effective from the 1st of January 2018. The Primate will hold the title Archbishop of Helsinki and all Finland. Dormition Cathedral in Helsinki will be Primate’s Cathedral.

Karelia is the current Primatial See of the ruling Finnish Archbishop (His Beatitude Leo of Karelia and All Finland). One of the major reasons for the change is that the majority of the Finnish Orthodox faithful are living in the Capital City. Metropolitan Ambrose of Helsinki will retire by the end of December 2017.

Diocese of Karelia will be renamed as the diocese of Kuopio and Karelia and a new Bishop will be elected in 2018.
