Feast of Saint George at the Patriarchal Residence
On 23 April, the Orthodox Church celebrates Saint Great Martyr George, the Trophy-bearer. On this day, the historical chapel of the Patriarchal Residence dresses feast vestments because it celebrates its protector, Saint George. Saint Daniel the Prophet and Saint Pious Parascheva are also saint patrons of the patriarchal chapel.
The feast began around 09.00 hours with the consecration by the Patriarch of Romania of a mosaic presenting scenes of the life of Saint George placed in the chapel porch. After the consecration, the Primate of the Romanian Orthodox Church celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the chapel, assisted by a group of priests and deacons.
His Beatitude showed, in the sermon delivered, that Saint Martyr George is an example for all Christians.
“Saint George is an example for keeping faith in hard times, even with the price of one’s own life. He is an example of justice, love and truth and of the love of Christ and His Church, and this is why he has become so popular all over the world. On this celebration day of Saint Greatr Martyr George we pray God that due to Saint George’s intercession and prayers our country, army should be protected, as well as all those of the name of George or of other names derived. We pray God to protect all the houses and families of those of this name and give all Christians the love for Christ, and for the Church that Saint Great Martyr George felt”, said His Beatitude according to Trinitas Radio station.
The author of the mosaic, painter Daniel Codrescu, and Horia Hahaianu who donated it we awarded the order “Sanctus Stefanus Magnus” by His Beatitude.
The historical chapel was built at the same time with the Patriarchal Cathedral, from 1656 – 1658, but finished later, in 1723, by Prince Nicolae Mavrocordat and by metropolitan Daniil (1719 – 1731), when a few renovations were made and the inner mural painting too. At the same time the chapel got the second saint patron, Saint Daniil the Prophet.
