Ethiopian Orthodox Church to hold Celebration

Members of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church today (27th September) will celebrate Meskel, or the feast of the exaltation of the holy cross. The holiday marks the discovery of the cross on which Jesus was crucified decades after it was buried and lost. Yikeset Belay said the gathering will begin at 6 p.m. at McCart Field near Madison Street and Western Avenue. The event includes a bonfire to commemorates the holiday’s origins. Ethiopian and Eritrean Orthodox Christians believe the cross was found in the year 326 after smoke from a bonfire ordered by Empress Eleni pointed to the burial spot.
