The Hagia Nicola Church, which serves as a public education center in Bodrum in the Aegean province of Muğla, will be restored into a museum.
The church, which was built in 1780 by the regional Orthodox community and served as a place of worship for 185 years, was sold by Mayor Derviş Görgün to the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Ministry for 10,000 Turkish Liras in 1965.
After the sale, the church was partially demolished and used as a depot for three years. The structure served as a movie theater between 1968 and 1970 before being handed over to the Education Ministry and transformed into a public education center.
Bodrum’s municipal assembly made the decision last week to turn the building into a church museum again after a restoration process.
