The head of the information center of the Mother See of Holy Echmiadzin has refuted reports that the Armenian and Georgian churches signed a document during the visit of Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II to Georgia.

“No text has ever been signed between the churches, moreover a text containing unacceptable formulations. It’s unclear who disseminated such reports and why they appeared in the information field,” Mediamax news agency quoted Father Vahram Melikian as saying.

Karekin II was on a six-day landmark visit to Georgia beginning June 10 during which he visited Tbilisi and the Armenian-populated province of the country.

While in the Georgian capital the head of the Armenian church held meetings with Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II and the country’s officials, including President Mikheil Saakashvili.

Last weekend the Armenian Catholicos’s press office reported that the two sides had agreed on the need for a legal status the local diocese of the Armenian Church and an official status to “the Georgian religious community in Armenia.”

Unverified reports in Georgian media later said the two sides had signed a communique. The Armenian Church has not confirmed that information.
