Dana-Farber Pioneer to be Honored at Hellenic College Holy Cross Commencement

Doctor George P. Canellos has spent the last 50 years dedicated to the fight against cancer. Next month he will receive an honorary degree from Hellenic College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in recognition of his exemplary leadership and service.

The honorary doctorate will be conferred on Canellos on May 17, 2014 at the 72nd Commencement of Hellenic College Holy Cross, 50 Goddard Avenue, Brookline, Massachusetts in the Pappas Auditorium.

Born in Boston, Dr. Canellos served as a Clinical Associate and as a Senior Investigator at the United States National Cancer Institute. In 1975, Dr. Canellos became the Founding Chief of Medical Oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston serving in that capacity until 1995. He is the first to hold the William Rosenberg Chair in Medicine at the Harvard Medical School and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute where he continues as Professor of Medicine.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, London, holds an Honorary Doctorate of Science from Athens University (Greece), and served as President of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. For 13 years he was also Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Doctor Canellos graduated cum laude from Harvard College in 1956. He earned the degree of Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in 1960. He served his Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital.
