Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Ivica Dacic, Minister of Religion and Diaspora Srdjan Sreckovic and leader of the opposition Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) Tomislav Nikolic conferred with Patriarch Irinej of the Serbian Orthodox Church at the Patriarchate building on Sunday.
After attending the morning Easter liturgy at the Belgrade Cathedral Church, the three officials and the patriarch entered the Patriarchate building.
Dacic and Sreckovic were the first to leave the building after an hour, while Nikolic followed suit some ten minutes later.
Nikolic launched his hunger and thirst strike on April 16 so as to force the government to call early elections and was transferred to the Belgrade Clinical Hospital Centre the following day, where he is said to have stayed until early this morning.
Upon exiting the Patriarchate, Sreckovic told reporters that it is not the time for politics but for a holiday that should celebrated with one’s family.
Lawyer Vladimir Bozovic addressed reporters on Nikolic’s behalf and said that Nikolic wishes to thank the media for reporting on his hunger and thirst strike over the past few days.
Bozovic said that Nikolic has accepted the appeal of Patriarch Irinej, Metropolitan Amfilohije and Bishop Irinej of Backa to spend Easter with his family.
When asked whether Nikolic has ended his hunger strike, Bozovic said that the SNS leader and the patriarch exchanged Easter greetings and that Nikolic ate his Easter egg.
