OCP News Service – 9/7/21
Cairo-Egypt: Bishop Anba Moussa slammed the practice of female genital mutilation in his recent speech. The Bishop called the practice horrendous and stated that no religious argument can justify it. He stated that there is no single version in the Holy Bible that supports Female Genital Mutilation. The Bishops also added that such practises can push victims to encounter terrifying psychological shock for a lifetime.
A large number of women are suffering from the practice of Female Genital Mutilation in many of the African countries including Egypt. In April 2021, Egyptian President Al Sisi incorporated amendments to the Penal Code. The amendment has resulted in increased penalties for all parties who are involved in the practice of female genital mutilation. The topic is widely debated on public media in the country as well.
Anba Moussa is the General Bishop of Youth Affairs of the Coptic Orthodox Church.
