Continued Support for Relief Work in the Philippines

NEW YORK – The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America continues to support recovery efforts in the Philippines. Through a recent $40,000 grant to the International Orthodox Christian Charities, the Archdiocese will finance a home reconstruction and agriculture assistance project.
This project will be coordinated by IOCC and implemented in collaboration with the Greek Orthodox Metropolitanate of Hong Kong and Southeast Asia, and the Antiochian Orthodox Catholic Archdiocese of Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines.
The grant, made possible by organizations, parishes, and faithful who contributed to the Archdiocesan Philippines Relief Fund, will benefit 200 families, as it will provide assistance to repair or rebuild 60 homes that were damaged or destroyed by Typhoon Haiyan and will offer planting seeds and agriculture inputs to 140 families who have lost their source of income due to the destruction produced by the storm. To date, the Archdiocese has donated $56,500 to assist with relief work in the Philippines.
Typhoon Hayian, which made landfall in the Philippines on November 8, 2013, is one of the most powerful storms ever recorded, and has left over six thousand people dead and millions of others without shelter or access to basic necessities.
