Church Burned In Egypt Sectarian Clash

8/5/2011

At least six people are reported to have been killed and at least one church set on fire during clashes between Muslims and minority Christians in Egypt’s capital Cairo.

The clashes May 7 were reportedly sparked after conservative Muslims went to a church to demand that Christians release a woman whom the Muslims say had converted to Islam.

In the violence in the western district of Imbaba, reports said the two sides exchanged gunfire and threw firebombs and stones.

Reports say police fired shots into the air and used tear gas to separate the sides.

Reports say at least one church was set on fire, apparently due to firebombs, during the unrest, and firefighters were called in to extinguish it.

Reports say sectarian tensions have heightened in Egypt amid uncertainty about the country’s future following the ouster of longtime ruler President Hosni Mubarak in February.

Coptic Christians make up about 10 percent of Egypt’s 80 million population.
