Catholicos-Patriarch Mar Gewargis III meets the President and the Prime Minister of Iraq

Iraq: His Excellency Fuad Masum, President of the Republic of Iraq received Monday His Holiness Mar Gewargis III Sliwa, Catholicos-Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East and accompanying prelates in Baghdad, Iraq.
During the meeting, the President noted that Christians are an authentic component of the country, and that their migration from the country is a loss for Iraq. He hoped for the return of those who were forced to migrate outside the country because of the threat posed by organisations like the Islamic State (“Daesh”) and committed to taking all necessary steps to ensure the continuity of Iraq’s Christian communities in Iraq.
His Holiness was accompanied by H.B. Dr Mar Aprem (Metropolitan of India), H.G. Mar Aprim Khamis (Bishop of Western USA), H.G. Mar Sargis Yosip (Bishop Emeritus), H.G. Mar Yohannan Yoseph (Bishop of India), H.G. Mar Awgin Kuriakose (Bishop of India) and H.G. Mar Narsai Benyamin (Bishop of Iran).
His Excellency Dr Haider Al-Abadi, Prime Minister of the Republic of Iraq has received a delegation from the Assyrian Church of the East headed by His Holiness Mar Gewargis III Sliwa, Catholicos-Patriarch. His Holiness was accompanied by H.B. Dr Mar Aprem (Metropolitan of India), H.G. Mar Aprim Khamis (Bishop of Western USA), H.G. Mar Sargis Yosip (Bishop Emeritus), H.G. Mar Yohannan Yoseph (Bishop of India), H.G. Mar Awgin Kuriakose (Bishop of India) and H.G. Mar Narsai Benyamin (Bishop of Iran).
During the meeting they discussed the general situation in the country, and encouraging Christians to remain in Iraq and not migrate, as well as a number of other topics.
The Prime Minister pointed out that the Iraqi government is working hard in order to protect its citizens from all components and sects, and seeks for them to obtain all their rights, indicating that the country is facing many challenges, the most important of which is terrorism, which requires the consolidation of all efforts in order to fight it and defeat it.
In turn, His Holiness offered his full support for the reforms carried out by the Prime Minister and his directives, adding that our prayers are for security and stability to return to Iraq and the liberation of its territory.
