Catholicos of All Armenians Received Venice Commission Delegation
On August 25, in the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadizn, His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians; received a delegation from the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe. They were accompanied by Mr. Gagik Harutyunyan, Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Armenia.
Welcoming the visit of the Venice Commission delegation to the Mother See, the Catholicos of All Armenians reflected on the important mission of the Armenian Church and the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin in the life of the Armenians, and introduced the Church’s spiritual educational-instructional activities that have been undertaken in the homeland since independence.
His Holiness, expressed his appreciation to the Venice Commission, for their assistance and advice to the Republic of Armenia on the elaboration of laws and constitutional reform. On this occasion, His Holiness stressed that the visit to Armenia by the Venice Commission delegation will promote a better understanding of the mentality, culture, and value system of the Armenian population, which is based on Christian values.
Mr. Gagik Harutyunyan presented a summary of the process of the draft constitutional amendments of the Republic of Armenia, and the work implemented to date by the Commission representatives during the past days, highlighting that the project already submitted for public discussion, creates sustainable constitutional prerequisites of democratic state.
During the meeting, a reference was made to the religious freedoms existing in the country and the Church-state relations. The sides underlined the importance of the Church’s role for the maintenance of peace and solidarity in the life of the society, as well as the strengthening of democratic values.
