Catholicos Congratulates PM Modi: Hails Historic Contributions of the Hindu Community

Malankara-Kerala-India: His Holiness Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Paulose II (Catholicos on the Apostolic Throne of St. Thomas and Malankara Metropolitan) congratulated His Excellency Narendra Modi on becoming the 16th Prime Minister of India after a landslide victory by the Brathya Janatha Party (BJP) in the recent Lok Sabha elections.

In a recent speech, the Catholicos hailed the support given by the Hindu rulers and Hindu community (in Kerala) which resulted in the growth and development of the Malankara Nasrani Church (with Jewish roots) in the early centuries. Their generous support played a crucial role in the survival of Christianity in Malankara. While the colonial rulers and colonial Churches tried to subjugate the indigenous Nasranis, it was the Hindu rulers who protected and accommodated the Nasranis by giving them a space of their own, the Primate added.

The ancient Orthodox Church of Malankara was established by St. Thomas the Apostle of Christ. The Primate of the Malankara Orthodox Church (Orthodox Syrian Church of the East) is the Chief of the Office of the Catholicate of the East, who is seated on the Apostolic Throne of St. Thomas.
