Bulgaria’s Capital Marks Saint Sofia Day

Bulgaria’s capital celebrates Friday St. Sofia Day – the date when the Orthodox world pays homage to the Holy Martyrs Sofia and her three daughters Faith, Hope and Love.
The flag of the capital will be hoisted at an official ceremony starting at 11:30 a.m. attended by President Georgi Parvanov and Prime Minister Boyko Borisov .
Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova will give a speech to congratulate the citizens and guests of Bulgaria’s capital.
A liturgy will be held in front of St. Sofia church as part of the official ceremony.
Starting 18:30 at the National “Ivan Vazov” Theater, the Sofia City Hall will bestow awards for achievements in arts and culture.
A series of musical events, including a concert of Bulgarian rock band Ahat, have been scheduled for the 17:00-22:00 time slot at the Alexander Batenberg square.
In 1992, the Sofia Municipal Council selected September 17th for the celebration of Sofia’s Day at the proposal of the then mayor.
Between 1979 and 1992, Sofia’s Day was marked on April 3, the day when Sofia was declared capital of the country back in 1879.
