Bulgarian Orthodox Church to Choose Interim Patriarch
10/11/2012
The Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church is sitting at an extraordinary council Saturday to elect its interim head after the passing of Patriarch Maxim.
Maxim, who has led the Church since 1971, died Tuesday, age 98, and was solemnly buried Friday.
The Church has to choose a successor within four months, among three candidates previously approved by the Holy Synod.
The other position occupied by the Bulgarian Patriarch – that of Sofia Metropolitan Bishop – has granted temporarily to hardline Plovdiv bishop Nikolay.
