Bells from Russia are put to Belgium monastery Belfry
Moscow, April 11, Interfax – Seven bells cast at the Moscow ZIL factory were put on the new belfry of the Catholic Benedictine Monastery of the Holy Cross in Chevetogne, Belgium, the Belgium Orthodox Diocese told Interfax-Religion.
Casting was mostly funded by the members of the Belgium Royal Family; and the bells were consecrated in the memory of King Baudouin I of Belgium well-known for his devoted piety: he declined his Royal Assent to the abortion law and even abdicated for one day due to this reason.
Besides, 20 years ago, Orthodoxy received the status of a traditional confession in Belgium by his order; and thus, the state provides its support to the Orthodox dioceses and the lessons of Orthodox Law are included in the school curriculum to be taught by parents’ choice.
Upon the consecration of the bells, Igor Konovalov, the Moscow Kremlin and the Cathedral of Christ the Savior art director of bell ringing, performed holiday ringing to all guests.
During the ceremony, Queen Fabiola and the monks of the Chevetogne Abbey could bow to the relics of St. Seraphim of Sarov.
The Chevetogne Abbey was founded in 1925. The services there are still conducted both according to Latin and Byzantium (Orthodox) ceremonies and in the Old Church Slavonic language.
