The spiritual leader of the world’s Orthodox Christians urged all with means to help the victims of famine in the Horn of Africa.
Patriarch Bartholomew I called for financial aid so that “our brothers who are grappling with death may quickly be rid of the ghost of hunger.” The patriarch made his comments to Turkey’s NTV television on Monday after leading a Mass at an ancient monastery on the Black Sea coast.
It was the second Mass held in the Byzantine-era monastery of Sumela in some 90 years after the Turkish government last year opened it up to worship in a gesture of good will toward the country’s minority Greek Orthodox community.
The Istanbul-based patriarch is the spiritual head of some 250 million Orthodox Christians.
