Astana to host Religious Forum
15/11/2011
The capital city of Kazakhstan is preparing for the first forum of Kazakhstan’s religious scholars. On November 16, scientists, experts on Islam, and representatives of the clergy are to meet in Astana to discuss existing issues in the sphere of religion and the regulation of state-religious relations at the legislative level. The National Agency for Religious Affairs reports that the Forum will provide a unique interactive platform for active interaction between religions and society.
Yesbossyn Smagulov, Chief Scientific Officer, International Center of Cultures and Religions:
– Of course, society is at a new stage of understanding what religiousness is all about and what new forms of interaction between state and religious associations are required now. We should also note that the government has made a big step forward through the new law. For the first time, its preamble highlights the role of traditional Islam and Orthodox Christianity. At the same time, Kazakhstan remains a secular state. These new realities require understanding from scientific and expert communities.
