Assyrian Genocide Monument Unveiled in Sweden

Stockholm (AINA) — A genocide monument to the Assyrian victims of the Turkish genocide in World War One was erected today in Botkyrka, a suburb of 20 KM southwest of Stockholm. The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Energy Ibrahim Baylan, European Parliamentarian Lars Adaktusson, and Syriac Orthodox archbishop Benjamin Atas.
Between 1915 and 1918 750,000 Assyrians (75%), 500,000 Greeks and 1.5 million Armenians were killed by Ottoman Turks and Kurds in a genocide that aimed at and nearly succeeded in destroying the Christian communities in the Ottoman Empire.
Friday, April 24, marked the centennial anniversary of the genocide.
Sweden is home to nearly 100,000 Assyrians.
Assyrian genocide monuments have been erected in ten cities throughout the world.
