Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem content with Abbas’ Statement

18/2/2011

The Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem is pleased with the statement of Mahmoud Abbas saying the Palestinian administration considers the Armenian Quarter a part of Eastern Jerusalem, said patriarchate’s representative.

“We do not want the Armenian Quarter to be divided into Jewish and Palestinian. We find important that our quarter should not be separated and should be united with the Church of the Holy Sepulchre,” archbishop Aris Shirvanian told Armenian News-NEWS.am. He also noted that two days ago patriarchate’s representatives met with head of Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas. “Abbas said he considers the Armenian Quarter an integral part of Jerusalem, capital of Palestine. We are content with this stance,” he said.

Mahmoud Abbas said the Palestinian administration considers the Armenian Quarter in the Old Jerusalem a part of Eastern Jerusalem. The documents disclosed by Al Jazeera last month showed the Palestinian negotiators offered to give up claims to the Jewish and Armenian Quarters, Jerusalem Post reported.

“The Palestinian leadership sticks to its position that considers the Armenian Quarter an integral part of east Jerusalem, the capital of the independent Palestinian state,” said Abbas in the course of his meeting with the heads of Christian communities.
