Archbishop Demetrios Receives an honorary doctorate from the University of Notre Dame

NEW YORK – The University of Notre Dame bestowed an honorary doctorate of laws degree upon Archbishop Demetrios of America, yesterday May 16, during the university’s 165th Commencement Ceremony held in Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Ind., which was filled with thousands of students, parents and relatives.
Brian Williams, anchor and managing editor of “NBC Nightly News was the keynote speaker and also the recipient of an honorary degree. According to an article appearing on the Notre Dame website, other honorary degree recipients were: Steven J. Brickner, a leader in the field of antibacterial drug development; Scott Cowen, president of Tulane University; Rev. Reginald Foster, a Catholic Carmelite priest and one of the world’s foremost authorities on the Latin language; MaryAnn Mathile, chief executive officer, board chair and treasurer of the Mathile Family Foundation; Marc Maurer, a 1974 Notre Dame alumnus and president of the National Federation of the Blind; venture capitalist Ted McCourtney; and Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, former Roman Catholic Archbishop of England.
Following the ceremony Archbishop Demetrios visited the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Andrew in South Bend, Indiana and met with the priest and the members of the parish to whom he offered paternal words of care and edification in Christ.
