An Orthodox priest attacked in Byelorussia

Minsk, August 24, Interfax – Bishop Sofrony of Mogilev and Mstislavl was attacked in Three Holy Hierarchs Cathedral in Mogilev, Byelorussia, on Sunday. The Bishop suffered several knife wounds.

According to eye-witnesses, Bishop Sofrony entered the Cathedral about nine o’clock in the morning before the beginning of the Holy Liturgy and turned to bless the parishioners. At that moment, a man approached him, took out a knife and stabbed Bishop Sofrony in abdomen, also injuring veins on his arm with which Bishop Sofrony was trying to cover himself from the second stab.

The Bishop was immediately rushed to the First City Clinical Hospital where he underwent an operation. His vital organs are not damaged. Currently, Bishop Sofrony remains in the intensive care unit. The surgery was successful, and he is out of danger.

The attacker was apprehended by parishioners who handed him over to police officer.
