A new icon of St. Ignatius Noorono presented to the church at Ma`arat Sayyidnaya
Syrian Orthodox Church
MA`ARAT SAYYIDNAYA, DAMASCUS: A new Icon of St. Ignatius Noorono, the third Patriarch of Antioch has been presented on the occasion of the consecration of the St. Ignatius Church at the Patriarchal centre , Ma`arat Sayyidnaya.
The icon was drawn by the respected sisters of the monastery of St. Demiana of the Coptic Orthodox church. St. Ignatius was the third patriarch of Antioch after St. Peter and St. Evodios. He was a disciple of St. Peter and St. John and a friend of St. Polycarpus of Smyrna. There is a popular traditional belief that St. Ignatius was the child our Lord took on his lap amidst his disciples as seen in Mathews 18:2.
He was imprisoned by the Romans and condemned to the wild beasts. The church honours him as a saint and martyr.
