Reflections on the future of the Oriental Orthodox Communion

The six ancient Oriental Orthodox Churches (OO) Churches, Coptic, Syriac, Armenian (Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin & Armenian Catholicate in Cilicia), Indian, Ethiopian, and Eritrean Orthodox Churches, include within their scope the Armenian Patriarchates in Jerusalem and Constantinople, Syriac Orthodox Church in India, Malankara Knanaya Archdiocese, the French Coptic Orthodox Church, the Brahmavar Orthodox Community (organized into episcopal diocese), and. These churches continue to offer the witness of Jesus Christ and his teachings to the world. Despite the huge political, religious, and geographical challenges, these ancient churches have survived and offered the true essence of Holy Orthodoxy to the modern world.

His Eminence Mar Yacob Elias (De Facto Julius II) is the Metropolitan of the Brahmavar Orthodox Diocese who is responsible to the Catholicate of the East. Historically, this was an autonomous Western (Latin) Rite (Known as the Independent Catholic Church Mission of Goa, Ceylon, and India) of the Indian Orthodox Malankara Church, currently organized as a diocese of the Indian Orthodox Church. The First Bishop of this Church was Mar Alvares Julis I who held the title ‘The Archbishop & Apostolic Prefect of Ceylon, Goa & India (Excluding Malabar)’.

His Holiness Abune Mathias I is the 6th Patriarch and Catholicos of Ethiopia, Archbishop of Axum and Ichege of the See of Saint Taklehaimanot. The Patriarch of Ethiopia also belongs to the lineage of Saint Frumentius of Axum and St. Philip, Deacon, and Evangelist.

The Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church
His Holiness Abune Antonios is the 3rd Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church who remains under house arrest since 2007. Eritrean Church belongs to the lineage of Evangelist St.Mark and Saint Frumentius of Axum. The church was granted autocephaly (elevated into a Patriarchate) in 1993 by the Coptic Church.
