Reflections on the future of the Oriental Orthodox Communion
The six ancient Oriental Orthodox Churches (OO) Churches, Coptic, Syriac, Armenian (Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin & Armenian Catholicate in Cilicia), Indian, Ethiopian, and Eritrean Orthodox Churches, include within their scope the Armenian Patriarchates in Jerusalem and Constantinople, Syriac Orthodox Church in India, Malankara Knanaya Archdiocese, the French Coptic Orthodox Church, the Brahmavar Orthodox Community (organized into episcopal diocese), and. These churches continue to offer the witness of Jesus Christ and his teachings to the world. Despite the huge political, religious, and geographical challenges, these ancient churches have survived and offered the true essence of Holy Orthodoxy to the modern world.
The Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria
His Holiness Pope Tawadros II is the 118th Pope & Patriarch of Alexandria on the Holy See of Saint Mark the Evangelist of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria. Coptic Pope is the ‘first among equals’ with no jurisdictional powers over sister churches.
The French Coptic Orthodox Church (Autonomous in matters of administration & governance in accordance with the Coptic Patriarchate). His Grace Bishop Athanasius is the General Bishop of France serving the French Coptic Orthodox Church and he is responsible to the Coptic Patriarchate of Alexandria (the Original Seat of the French Coptic Church is vacant since 1998).
The Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch and All East
His Holiness Moran Mor Ignatius Aphrem II is the 123rd Patriarch of Antioch and all the East on the Apostolic Throne of St. Peter and Supreme Primate of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church.
The Syriac Orthodox Church in India (Jacobite Syriac Orthodox Church. Autonomous in matters of administration & governance in accordance with the Syriac Patriarchate). His Beatitude Aboon Mor Baselios Thomas I is the Catholicos-Maphriyano of Indian & Metropolitan Trustee of the Church in India. He is the Primate of the Syriac Orthodox Church in India and is responsible to the Patriarch of Antioch and All East.
The Malankara Knanaya Archdiocese (Autonomous in matters of administration & governance in accordance with the Syriac Patriarchate). His Eminence Kuriakose Mor Severios is the Archbishop and Chief Metropolitan of the Knanaya Archdiocese, Chingavanam & Gulf Regions.
The Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church
Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin
His Holiness Karekin II is the 132nd Supreme Patriarch & Catholicos of All Armenians in the Lineage of Apostol’s Bartholomew, Thaddeus and St Gregory the Illuminator. He is the Primate of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church. The spiritual authority of the Catholicosate of All Armenians remains supreme.
The Armenian Orthodox Church of Lebanon
His Holiness Aram I is the Catholicos of the Holy See of Cilicia of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church. He is the Primate of the Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia in Lebanon.
The Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem (Autonomous in matters of administration & governance in accordance with the Mother See). His Beatitude Nourhan Manougian is the 97th Armenian Patriarch-Archbishop of Jerusalem of the Armenian Apostolic Church. He is responsible to the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Armenia and the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin.
The Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Patriarchate of Constantinople (Autonomous in matters of administration & governance in accordance with the Mother See). His Beatitude Mesrob II Mutafyan is the 84th Armenian Patriarch-Archbishop of Constantinople of the Armenian Apostolic Church. He is responsible to the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Armenia and the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. The Patriarch is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and is currently under medical treatment.
His Eminence Aram Ateşyan is the Co-Patriarch of the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem who is in charge of the administrative and spiritual matters. A new Patriarch will be elected soon.
The Indian Orthodox Malankara Church
Catholicate of the East (Orthodox Syrian Church of the East)
His Holiness Baselios Mar Thoma Paulose II is the 91st Catholicos on the Apostolic Throne of St. Thomas and 21st Malankara Metropolitan. He is the Primate of the Indian Orthodox Malankara Church.
The Brahmavar (Goan) Orthodox Church (Organized as an Episcopal Diocese of the Indian Orthodox Church). His Eminence Mar Yacob Elias (De Facto Julius II) is the Metropolitan of the Brahmavar Orthodox Diocese who is responsible to the Catholicate of the East. Historically, this was an autonomous Western (Latin) Rite (Known as the Independent Catholic Church Mission of Goa, Ceylon, and India) of the Indian Orthodox Malankara Church, currently organized as a diocese of the Indian Orthodox Church. The First Bishop of this Church was Mar Alvares Julis I who held the title ‘The Archbishop & Apostolic Prefect of Ceylon, Goa & India (Excluding Malabar)’.
The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church
His Holiness Abune Mathias I is the 6th Patriarch and Catholicos of Ethiopia, Archbishop of Axum and Ichege of the See of Saint Taklehaimanot. The Patriarch of Ethiopia also belongs to the lineage of Saint Frumentius of Axum and St. Philip, Deacon, and Evangelist.
The Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church
His Holiness Abune Antonios is the 3rd Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church who remains under house arrest since 2007. Eritrean Church belongs to the lineage of Evangelist St.Mark and Saint Frumentius of Axum. The church was granted autocephaly (elevated into a Patriarchate) in 1993 by the Coptic Church.
His Grace Makarios is the Bishop of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewhedo Church Archdiocese of North America. The USA diocese remains one of the canonical diaspora organization of the Eritrean Church.
