10,000-Square-Foot Lincoln Park Church Conversion Drops $400K

The granddaddy of Chicago church conversions has come back on the market: a 10,143-square-foot mansion in Lincoln Park. The massive home got the Wall Street Journal’s ‘House of the Day’ treatment a couple years ago, and from that we’ve learned that the place was built as a Greek Orthodox church in 1896 and converted to a residence about 20 years ago.
Then, in 2002, Burns & Beyerl Architects were brought in to renovate the place, using many reclaimed materials. Perhaps the home’s most unique room is the kitchen, with the fireplace and sloping Byzantine ceiling. The home also has a cobblestone courtyard, hidden behind a seven-foot wall. The listing also says that the adjacent lot is available, which would bump the property up to three city lots. No word on whether that zen-looking four-poster is included in the sale (probably not). When the home was last on the market, in 2009, it was priced at $4.2 million; today, it was relisted for $3.8 million.
