Ethiopian Christians celebrate the Finding of the True Cross
Addis Ababa, September 27, 2010 (WIC) – The followers of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church lit a big bone fire (Demera) in commemoration of the Finding of the True Cross by Empress Eleni yesterday at the Meskel Square in Addis Ababa.
The occasion of lighting the big bone fire is held every year at the Eve of Meskel Holiday Day with various charming religious songs and unique ceremonial activities since the beginning of the discovery of the Holy Cross.
Speaking on the occasion, the Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Churches, His Holiness Abune Paulos, welcomed the people attending the ceremony. He also expressed his respect and love to all the diplomats and other foreigners who came to celebrate the Holy Cross Day with Ethiopians.
His Holiness also said the objective of the ceremony is to commemorate the Finding of Holy Cross of the Christ, which is the love, patient, unity and identity of the followers of Christianity.
Thousands of Ethiopian Christians with their traditional dressing style gathered at the Meskel square and hundreds of priests from different churches came with their attractive church dresses performed their amusing chanting and religious songs for the people.
