The Wooden Orthodox Church in Urși (Romania), Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage (Cyprus) Wins European Heritage Award – 2021

Bucharest- Romania: The small wooden Orthodox chapel of Annunciation and the Archangel Michael located in Valcea county (Romania) won the Conservation Category and the Public Choice Awards. The Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage (Cyprus) won the best award for Dedicated Service to Heritage by Organisations & Individuals Category.
The other winners are FIBRANET, FIBRes in ANcient European Textiles in Research Category, and the Invention of a Guilty Party, Trento (Italy) in Education, Training and Awareness-raising category. Winners were selected from 24 submissions from 18 countries for the 2021 European Heritage Awards.
Constructed between 1757 and 1784, this wooden church in Ursi village survived a fire in the 1830s. The chapel and was restored lately with the cooperation and support of several national and local partners.
Established in 2008 by the Greek Cyprus and Turkish leaders, the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage (Cyprus) has successfully restored over 70 cultural monuments.
