Archbishop Elpidophoros Issues Apology, Meets Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades

New York – USA: Archbishop Elpidophoros, the primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of USA of the Ecumenical Patriarchate issued an apology over his attendance at the Opening Ceremony of the ‘Turkish’ Turkevi Center together with Turkish President Erdogan and others. His presence at the inaugural ceremony invited sharp criticisms from Greek, Cypriot and Armenian nationalists. The Greek and Cypriot governments also criticised the Archbishop. As a response, the Archbishop issued a statement of apology.
“I sincerely regret the pain I inadvertently caused to my Cypriot and Greek-American brothers,” the Archbishop stated in his tweet.
On the 25th of September, Archbishop Elpidophoros met President Nicos Anastasiades of Cyprus in New York. After the meeting, Anastasiades stated that the unity of Hellenism is important and the apology issued by the Archbishop is satisfactory.
