Russian Orthodox Church has raised over 12 million roubles in aid to wildfire Victims

By the morning of August 9, 2010, the Synodal Department for Church Charity and Social Service has sent 99 cars with humanitarian aid, about 120 tons, to the most affected regions of Ryazan, Voronezh, Lipetsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Vladimir and Moscow. During the day, it managed to send 11 more cars: 4 to the Ryazan Region, 2 to the Voronezh and Moscow regions each, and 1 to each of regions of Nuzhny Novgorod, Vladimir and Lipetsk.

The department invites volunteers to collect and sort out the aid brought in to it (Rimskaya metro station, Nikoloyamskaya, 57, Build. 7). At present there is a need to drinking water and storable foodstuffs, such as canned food, cereals, etc.

To coordinate the work and designated aid the departments needs fresh information about the situation in the affected areas. Volunteers with cars are invited to gather field information. An instruction for volunteers is available at the Miloserdie website; e-mail:otdel.pozhar@yandex.ru.

The Russian National Volunteer Fire-Fighters (VDPO) recruits volunteers for fighting forest and peat-bog fires. Its offices are open in the Ryazan, Voronezh, Nizhni Novgorod and Moscow regions, as well as Republics of Chuvashia and Mordovia. Volunteers are asked to bring with them spades, gauze bandages, gloves, helmets if possible, food and water. It is possible to come by car and to walk; transportation buses have been arranged. Many offices of the society have opened stations to receive necessities in aid to victims of fires. The offices’ telephones as well as information about the situation and the volunteer fire-fighting system are available at the society’s website http://www.vdpo.ru.
