Archbishop Leo – A Signatory of the Petition Urging the Finnish Govt to Accede to the UN Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty

Helsinki-Finland: Archbishop Leo of Helsinki and Finland and the Primate of the Finnish Orthodox Church has become a signatory of the petition that urged the Finnish Parliament and Government to work for the accession of the Country into the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty. The UN Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty entered into force on 22 January 2021. It is the first international treaty to prohibit nuclear weapons. The petition was signed by 121 influential Finnish people.
The treaty prohibits the development, testing, production, manufacture, transport, possession, storage, use or intimidation of nuclear weapons or assistance in such activities. States Parties shall also not permit the placement of nuclear weapons on their territory.
“The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty is expected to form part of international law, which will on top set the norm for countries not covered by the treaty” stated Kati Juva, Coordinator of the ICAN Finland Network.
