His Holiness Patriarch Kirill Conferred Honorary Doctor Degree of National Dnipropetrovsk Oles Honchar University

On July 24, in the evening on the premises of the Students’ Palace of the National Dnipropetrovsk Oles Honchar University His Holiness Patriarch Kirill met with professors and students of the education establishment.

At the entrance to the palace the students gathered, many of whom held posters with greetings to the Primate of the ROC in their hands. His Holiness was treated to bread and salt.
Taking part in the meeting were Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine D.Tabachnyk, head of the regional state administration A.Vilkul, chairman of the regional council E.Udod, chair of the city council I.Kulichenko, deputy chair of the regional state administration M. Pustova, deputy head of the regional council A.Shipko, rector of the National Dnipropetrovsk University N.Polyakov, numerous students and members of pedagogical-professorial staff.

Attending the arrangement were Metropolitan Iriney of Pavlohrad and Dnipropetrovsk, other ukrainianhierarchs and the delegation members accompanying His Holiness Patriarch Kirill in his visitation of Ukraine: Chancellor of the Moscow Patriarchy Metropolitan Varsonofy of Saransk and Mordovia, chairman of the Department for External Church Relations Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokalamsk, Metropolitan Iriney of Dnipropetrovsk and Pavlohrad, Metropolitan Hilarion of Donetsk and Mariupol, Archbishop Efraim of Kryvyi Rih and Nikopol, abbot of the Holy Trinity St. Sergius Lavra Archbishop Theognost of Sergiev Posad, Bishop Metrophanes of Horlivka and Slavyansk, chairman of the administrative Secretariat of the Moscow Patriarchy Bishop Sergy of Solnechnogorsk, Bishop Evlogy of Novomoskovsk, chairman of the Synodal Information Department V.R.Legoyda, chairman of the Synodal Department for Church-Society Relations archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin, deputy chairman of the DECR archpriest Nikolai Balashov, Secretary of the DECR for Inter-Orthodox Relations prest Igor Yakimchuk, head of the personal secretariat of His Holiness the Patriarch hieromonk Anthony Sevriuk etc.

N.Polyakov announced the decision of the Academic Council of the National Dnipropetrovsk University on conferment on His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia of the degree Doctor Honoris Causa and passed the diploma and a medal of honor to His Holiness. The vice-rectors of the University presented doctoral robe and other distinctions to the patriarch.

His Holiness delivered a lection dedicated to interrelation of religion and science, and answered student’s questions.

In conclusion of the meeting the university rector offered His Holiness the Patriarch a painting depicting the Students’ Palace. In remembrance of the event that took place His Holiness donated the book «patriarchs of Moscow and All Russia” and a set of silver medals stamped on the occasion of the 1725th anniversary of the Holy hierarch Nicholas of Myra, the Wonderworkers.
