His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, Supreme Head of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church, their Eminences the Archbishops, members of the Holy Synod of Antioch, mourn the thrice blessed Archbishop Mor Philoxenus Matta Chamoun, Former Honorary Archbishop of Edessa and Director of the Patriarchal Benevolent Institutions in Atchaneh, who passed away in Atchaneh – Lebanon, on Sunday April 7, 2019.
The Funeral Service will be held at Virgin Mary Cathedral in Atchaneh, Le,banon, on Monday, April 8, 2019.
Condolences shall be received in the Patriarchal Residence in Atchaneh – Lebanon, on the same day from 4 till 8 p.m.
The thrice blessed was born in Bartelly – Iraq in 1930. He joined Mor Aphrem Theological Seminary (in Mosul back then) in 1945. He was tonsured a monk in 1954. In 1956, Archbishop Mor Severius Yaacoub, Archbishop of Damascus and Beirut (Thrice Blessed Patriarch Mor Ignatius Yaacoub III) ordained him as a priest and appointed him as his secretary.
Mor Philoxenus Matta Chamoun was appointed as director of Mor Aphrem Orphanage in Beirut (Khandaq al Ghamiq). As soon as the Late Patriarch Yaacoub III established the Patriarchal Benevolent Institutions in Atchaneh in 1966, he appointed Raban Matta Chamoun as Director of the Patriarchal Benevolent Institutions.
In 1969, Raban Matta got a license to open a “Mor Aphrem Social School” under his direction. Later in 1978, he was appointed as Director of Mor Aphrem Seminary in Atchaneh.
Later on 25/11/1979, Late Patriarch Mor Ignatius Yaacoub III ordained him as Honorary Archbishop of Edessa and the Patriarchal Benevolent Institutions.
He resigned in 2006 due to his advancement in age.
