“No Division within the Holy Synod of the Coptic Orthodox Church” – Bishop Anba Suriel

“We have read on social media concerning rumors that say that there is a division within the Holy Synod and that some bishops are plotting to overthrow His Holiness Pope Tawadros II. As a member of the Holy Synod, I have not heard of any such talk and it has no basis of truth.
His Holiness Pope Tawadros II was chosen by Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ to lead our holy Coptic Orthodox Church. Our Synod now has approximately 130 metropolitans and bishops and in all our meetings we have the opportunity to share our thoughts and opinions in a democratic way full of love and respect. Differing opinions and views among the Synod members do not mean division at all. It means that healthy discussions on a variety of topics can be discussed openly in a spirit of transparency, respect, and love.
We can listen to each other and learn from the wisdom of the synod members and study and hear the words of the Scriptures and the teachings of the early Fathers of Church being guided by the Holy Spirit to reach decisions that are faithful to the teachings and traditions of our Church. This is the conciliar nature of the Church and we are led in all these deliberations by His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, may the Lord preserve his life and protect the Church from the arrows of the enemy who seeks to destroy the progress of the ministry.
Let us utilise this Great Lent to pray for His Holiness Pope Tawadros II and the members of our Holy Synod and indeed for our faithful people all over the world that the Lord Jesus Christ may give us peaceful times full of joy and let us not waste our time following after rumors and turn inwards and look inside ourselves and purify ourselves in order to live lives of repentance.” – Bishop Anba Suriel.
