Orthodox Georgians mark Day of Saint Tamar

2010.05.14

The Georgian Orthodox Church celebrates the day of St. King Tamar of Georgia on May 14. Regarding the event, all orthodox churches across the country will conduct a festive liturgy.

The Georgian Patriarch`s administration reports that Didube Virgin Mary`s Cathedral marks the date with a special respect, as the King Tamar got married at Didube church.

In the period of the King Tamar’s reign (1184-1213) Georgia was the most powerful Kingdom in the Middle East.

In later times, a number of legends emerged about Tamar`s place of burial. One of them has it that Tamar was buried in a secret niche at Gelati so as to prevent the grave from being profaned by her enemies. Another version suggests that Tamar`s remains were reburied in a remote location, possibly in the Holy Land.
