Syrian Christian Women of India – A rewinding of History

Syrian Orthodox Church in India

1/5/2010

Hundreds of Syrian Orthodox women gathered wearing their traditional Syrian Christian dress on women’s annual day celebrations of the diocese of Kottayam.

Manarcad, (INDIA) – May 1, 2010: An almost waning tradition was reappearing at the annual general meeting of the Morth Mariam Samajam (Women’s organization) of the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox diocese of Kottayam when all the participants came in traditional Syrian Christian dress. This is one dress that has almost disappeared from the community with the advent of new dressing patterns adopted by modern women. Except for a few elderly Syrian Christian women, these days one could rarely come across someone wearing this traditional dress and is in the process of complete extinction within a few years.

Around 500 members were part of the one day cultural programs held at the Morth Mariyam Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Christian Cathedral here. Metropolitan of Kozhikode and the Australia & New Zealand dioceses, H.E. Mor Irenios Paulose inaugurated the conference and Very Rev. Kuriakose Corepiscopa Kizhakkedath presided over.
