FIRST ELECTED EGYPTIAN-AMERICAN OFFICIAL UNITED STATES HISTORY

Sherrie Mikhail Miday, a first-generation Coptic-Egyptian-American lawyer born in Cleveland, Ohio became the first elected official in U.S. history of Egyptian origin on November 8, 2016.

The historic victory came by a convincing margin of 54% to 46%. Sherrie defeated a judge whose father and grandfather were judges in the same court for decades. The Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas is both a felony criminal and civil court. The judge-elect will preside over both types of cases starting on January 5, 2017, and has a 6-year term.

Sherrie Mikhail Miday is the daughter of Archpriest Fr. Mikhail Edward Mikhail, D.Min., and his wife Seham, of St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church of Cleveland. Fr. Mikhail has served this community since he was assigned by H.H. Pope Shenouda III of Blessed Memory in 1975.
